Job Title: Truck Mechanic
Job Overview: A Truck Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining heavy-duty trucks and their associated systems. They work with various components of commercial trucks, including the engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, and electrical systems, to ensure that the vehicles are operating safely and efficiently. Truck mechanics play a vital role in keeping fleets of trucks running smoothly, minimizing downtime, and extending the life of the vehicles.
Responsibilities:
- Inspection & Diagnostics:
- Perform routine inspections and diagnostics on trucks to identify mechanical issues and malfunctions.
- Use diagnostic tools and computerized systems to detect problems within the engine, transmission, exhaust system, and other vehicle components.
- Repairs & Maintenance:
- Repair and replace defective parts or components such as engines, transmissions, axles, brakes, tires, and electrical systems.
- Conduct preventative maintenance tasks such as oil changes, fluid checks, filter replacement, and alignment adjustments.
- Parts Management:
- Order parts and maintain inventory to ensure availability for repairs and maintenance.
- Ensure the proper installation of parts and ensure that they meet safety and performance standards.
- Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, services performed, and parts used.
- Log service dates and mileage to track maintenance schedules and prevent overdue servicing.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure that all repair work meets safety standards and complies with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., DOT inspections).
- Conduct safety inspections and address issues related to the operation of the vehicle.
- Customer Interaction:
- Communicate with truck owners, fleet managers, and drivers to explain repair needs, issues, and solutions.
- Provide cost estimates for repairs and parts before work begins.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Technical Skills:
- Extensive knowledge of heavy-duty truck systems, including engine, transmission, braking, electrical, and suspension systems.
- Proficient with diagnostic equipment, hand tools, and machinery commonly used in the maintenance and repair of trucks.
- Problem-Solving:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose complex mechanical issues.
- Attention to Detail:
- Ability to follow specifications and ensure precision in repairs and installations.
- Communication Skills:
- Good communication skills to explain repair needs to non-technical customers and drivers.
